The Ayurvedic core — Triphala

The three fruits — Haritaki, Amalaki, and Bibhitaki — are the backbone of classical Ayurvedic eye care. Together they're called Triphala ("three fruits"), and they've been used in eye preparations for over a thousand years.

• Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is the detoxifier — it cleanses the eye of impurities and reduces infection risk.
• Amalaki (Emblica officinalis, Indian gooseberry) is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C. It nourishes the tissue around the eye and is traditionally believed to sharpen eyesight over time.
• Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) brings the anti-inflammatory action — it calms puffiness and has a mild astringent quality that tightens and soothes.

The star ingredient — Sahadevi

Sahadevi (Vernonica cinerea) is what makes this formulation genuinely uncommon. It's a cooling herb used in Ayurveda specifically for eye ailments. It reduces redness, calms irritation, and has documented antimicrobial properties. What's notable here is that it's used in two ways — as an extract in the kajal itself, and as a soak for the wick. That double use is a classical Ayurvedic preparation technique, not a marketing detail.

The fats — ghee, castor oil, almond oil

These three do different jobs:

• Cow's ghee is the traditional base for Ayurvedic eye preparations (anjana). It's deeply nourishing, cooling, and helps carry the herbal actives into the skin. It's also what gives this kajal its smooth, glide-on texture.
• Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, which conditions lash follicles and promotes growth. Regular commercial kajals use mineral oil or silicones for the same glide effect — castor oil does it while actually feeding the lashes.
• Almond oil brings vitamins A and E, both of which protect the delicate periorbital skin (the thin skin around the eye that ages fastest).

The waxes — bee wax and carnauba wax

These give the stick its structure. Bee wax (Cera alba) is a natural emollient — it forms a breathable, protective film rather than a suffocating layer. Carnauba wax comes from a Brazilian palm and is the hardest natural wax available; it gives the stick its firmness without cracking. Importantly, it's hypoallergenic and plant-based, which matters near the eye.

Yashti Madhu — the brightener

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) contains glabridin, a compound shown to inhibit pigmentation. It's why it's used in eye creams for dark circles. Having it in a kajal that sits on the waterline means you're getting a passive brightening effect with every application.

The wick — the part most people overlook

The wick is what the kajal is actually burned on during preparation. Cotton soaked in Sahadevi swarasa (fresh juice), Dharuharidra (Berberis aristata, Indian barberry — a natural antimicrobial with berberine), and Triphala kwatha (a concentrated decoction of all three fruits). This isn't decoration — the wick material directly affects the smoke used to create the kajal carbon. It's the oldest quality-control step in the formulation, and most commercial kajals simply skip it.
